Paula Romero, Max’s formidable 83 year old grandmother, married Pablo Romero at the end of the Spanish Civil War during which Paula’s brother Antonio, a friend of the poet Federico Garcia Lorca, disappeared.
Juan Romero is Max’s cousin, married to Isabel. They have two children, Leonardo and Encarnita.
Bernardo Romero, Paula’s only surviving child, married Glaswegian music student Flora Maxwell. The marriage did not last. They have two children, Max and his elder sister, Susanna.
Max Romero is Paula’s youngest grandchild. He somehow got through the police entrance exams and is now a sub-inspector in the Policia National in Granada
Leila Mahfouz is the daughter of Ahmed Mahfouz, the leader of a small Muslim Sufi community in Diva, a village south of Granada. She is doing a thesis on the impact of the Spanish Civil War in Diva.
